What is a large format printer?

Large format printers (aka wide format printing) support material widths of 18” to 100”. Our machines support over 8 feet wide projects and print using inkjet technology. Rather than printing onto individual sheets, large format machines feed a roll of printing material incrementally. This allows for very long and wide prints at custom sizes.

How do large format printers work?

Large format printers utilize toner ink similar to digital printers. The machine is able to apply ink directly to a variety of large scale materials. It is a very fast and efficient printing process that produces high quality colors.

How should I prepare my large format project files?

It is essential to set up your design files to accurate specs. This will ensure that your final product stands out and draws the attention of your audience. With large format the spec will vary some depending on the distance someone might be viewing the item. For instance, a large billboard that is viewed from a distance can be designed at a lower resolution like 72 dpi. While material that will be viewed up close will need to be designed at a 300 dpi resolution. Additionally, files should be designed with the CMYK palette. 

Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop are the best software for designing your project. Illustrator is particularly useful for large format since it is vector based. This allows designs to easily be scaled up to an appropriate size without losing any quality. When working in Photoshop you must be sure to use images that are high enough resolution and big enough to be printed without them being blurry or pixelated.
